How does teeth bleaching works?

Our teeth have tendency to get darker with age and time, due to impurities that sticks to the tooth enamel. These discolorations comes mostly from the consumption of coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco and cannot be removed just with ordinary tooth brushing. To get back to the initial tone that your teeth had from the beginning it is necessary to do a teeth bleaching treatment.

The first thing you have to do, is to get a careful tooth cleaning done by your dentist or hygienist before starting, so that the bleaching will be done on the teeth surface and not on tartar or plaque. The actual bleaching will preferably be done at the same appointment and it will approximately take one hour. A coating of bleaching agent will be applied on your teeth, avoiding contact with the gums. The dental nurse or the dentist will irradiate your teeth with an ultraviolet lamp to increase the reaction of the bleach coating. This procedure will be repeated three or four times depending on the result, until the teeth have regained their initial colour. The final result is individual and depends largely on how much discoloration your teeth had at the start of the treatment. In the normal case the effects of whitening will remain for some years, but here it is also depending on the habits of the patient and his consumption of food and beverages that stains.
